Carlos Surinach (b 1915) is an American composer whose work remains profoundly rooted in the musical tradition of his native Spain. His music is permeated by the rhythms and colors of Spanish folk music, albeit distilled and refracted through his imagination in much the same way that Bartók used Hungarian folk music. What emerges is a music of great structural integrity and clarity－due no doubt to his musical training in Germany in the years leading up to World War II－characterized by a strong rhythmic pulse, brilliant colors, and delicately rendered shifts of mood.
The seven works presented here illustrate, in varying degrees, the aforementioned qualities－the driving flamenco rhythms of Ritmo Jondo, the shifting colors and moods of the Three Spanish Songs and Dances, Three Berber Songs, and Tientos. The two song cycles, Three Songs of Spain, and Tres Cantares, are very much in the mold of Falla's Seven Popular Spanish Songs.
The disc closes with the brilliantly witty Hollywood Carnival, the one work on this disc purely American in inspiration, a suite in six movements that is a very personal hommage to the movies. The flavor of the composition is perfectly captured by the title of the last movement－"Pasodoble in Technicolor"!
