Cleveland Chamber Symphony/Edwin London; Regina Mushabac, cello

The music of Rudolph Bubalo (1927-2004) is built of intervals and layered cells that occupy seemingly conventional forms-concertos and the like. He folds live and electronic sound sources together in soundscapes full of energy, drive and surprises. He regards the use of technology in the musical process as the use of new and additional instruments. Their role is essentially limited to that of providing additional color.

The underlying rationale is always the expressiveness of the powerful and invisible world of sound. A pronounced lyrical gift-exemplified in the nocturnal slow movement of the Cello Concerto and the second movement of the Concertino-as well as a sense of humor-the rollicking third movement of the Concertino-combine to make Bubalo'’s music very approachable to listeners interested in investigating fresh repertory not too far off the beaten path.
