Pacific Classical Winds
David Moritz Michael (1751-1827), contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, was a Moravian minister born and educated in Germany. He came to the United States in 1795 to teach and serve as music director in the Moravian communities in Nazareth and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was also a fine composer whose two Water Music suites and 14 Parthien (Partitas) for woodwinds are considered his masterpieces.
By A Spring is the second of the two Water Music suites composed by Michael for Whitmonday (the Monday following Pentecost), which was celebrated as a general music festival by the Moravian community in Bethlehem. The townfolk would gather outdoors, on the banks of the Lehigh River, and enjoy the spring weather, conversation, and the bucolic sounds of Michael's music. By A Spring is in fourteen movements for six woodwinds (pairs of clarinets, natural horns, bassoons, and a single string bass), composed in the Classical style of Haydn and Mozart. Charm, lighthearted pleasure, playful whimsy, and poetic sentiment abound in this delightful harmoniemusik.
Parthias 3, 4, and 5－woodwind serenades which were performed at both concerts and informal gatherings－bring the proceedings to a buoyant conclusion. The elegant and animated period-instrument performances perfectly capture the spirit of the music. This world-premiere recording of another hitherto unknown gem will be a delightful discovery for anyone who enjoys music of this period or wind music in general.
