Shuffle Along was a miracle.
In the spring of 1921 hardly anyone believed that a musical written, performed, produced, and directed by American blacks could be presented on Broadway.
But on May 23 Shuffle Along opened at New York's 63rd Street Theatre, which was then part of Broadway, and promptly made theatrical history.
